Not sure if you’ve noticed, but Giant Magazine has quietly faded to black.
While we like the direction that the new EIC Smokey Fontaine (Formerly of America Magazine) is bringing to the brand, some of his staffers aren’t feeling the love - according to the newly revamped Radar Online. It seems the staff is migrating at record numbers, and at times to lower masthead listing jobs.
While we are feeling the new Giant, it does remind us on America, one of the hottest mags to fold in recent memory. Giant used to be aimed at the more sophisticated Maxim crowd, with cover subjects like Mischa Barton (above), Katie Holmes and Owen Wilson. Now your more likely find Janet Jackson or Beyonce under the title, which we don’t mind, considering the consensus thought in the mag world is, “Black people don’t sell magazine.” (A prominent Editor-in-Chief of a national magazine told me that.)
What do you think about the new direction of Giant. Will it go the way of America, or become the next hot urban must have?
