Apparently the duet is officially en vogue again. Recently, we’ve been subjected treated to an unusual amount of diva duets, so much so even Monica & Fantasia have joined forces. Always the trend spotter, we decided to highlight some of our favorite vagina coalition jams, and what makes them rock or not.

Brandy/Monica “The Boy Is Mine” >
Does It Rock? > Probably the most well executed duet of the list. Everything from the song, video, to the live performances played into the perceived tensions between the budding pop tarts. At the time neither act truly out shined the other, ironically, it was the highpoint of Monica’s career.

Beyonce/Shakira “Beautiful Liar” >
Does It Rock? >
The duet that has everything you’d expect from the words biggest international pop superstars… sexy, well written, and even a bit danceable… the only problem, it’s also a bit boring. Would have been a bit sexier if Beyonce was battling Jennifer Hudson for something other than an Oscar.

Britney/Madonna “Me Against The Music” >
Does It Rock? >
On paper, this song should have been the event of the decade. Looking back, it was more forgettable than memorable thanks to Britney’s breathless vocals, Madonna’s maniacal dance moves, and that strange lesbianic storyline. We think this idea would have worked better, with a different song.

Rihanna/Nicole “Winning Women” >
Does It Rock? >
Right song, wrong women. Inherently, there isn’t anything wrong with “Winning Women,” it’s just that it doesn’t work well as a duet. Are they singing, or are they rapping? Who cares, next track.

Whitney/Mariah “When You Believe” >
Does It Rock? > Our least favorite of the bunch, this duet just doesn’t seem to hold water once you get past the marquee names. Historically, a song from two forces like Whitney (Before the Crack) Houston and Mariah (Before the Crazy) Carey should be sonically off the meters, but this comes off a little more, “Night At The Pop’s,” than Diva’s Live. Shame on Clive.
