Hip hoppers find influence in the strangest places, from rickety ceiling fans (Outkast‘s “Elevators”) to trendy colored lip gloss (Lil’ Mama), but we never imagined that French house duo Daft Punk would be the ultimate muse.
It was a fluke when Busta Rhymes sampled Daft Punk’s “Technologic,” for his massive hit “Touch It,” on his Big Bang album last year. But sampling Daft Punk has become a certifiable trend now that Kanye has recycled the house duo’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” for his first single from the Graduation album, “Stronger.”
Why is this trend so surprising in hip hop? Because Daft Punk’s sound is also a little homo - something your more likely to hear in an alternative club, and not on the block.
Considering the homophobia in most rap music, it’s supremely ironic that scores of rap fans will now bob their heads to a digitally altered house song, that once even featured Kanye duet-er Pharrell singing on the chorus for the, “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” remix, (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)
It makes us wonder if Beanie Siegel was on to something when he called out Pharrell & Kanye earlier this year for their designer outfits and even more designer music or was he hating because he didn’t think of it first. Who do you think will sample Daft Punk next?
