Model Thru It: Rocka

As a verbose individual conveying an emotion or thought without the use of words or sounds, seems like the most daunting task ever.

But a word like “daunting” can’t even begin to describe what I felt when I had to step away from critiquing models, to actually being one.

Photographer Ruben Roncallo was brave enough to use my image in his latest T-shirt campaign featuring the looks of Harlem. Considering I haven’t even been in Harlem (I’m all Brooklyn and the Lower East Side these days), in over a year, I wasn’t sure I even fit the look he was trying to achieve. But my worries were quickly put to rest when he informed me that my massive ‘fro was going to do the real modeling.

Later I found myself in Spanish Harlem, posing in traffic with a power fisted afro pick, dangling from my follicles. After a small crowd of urban kids who’d congregated began cheering me on when I stuck my neck out further, or increased the intensity of my face – it increased my confidence exponentially. It occurred to me that I was just doing my best impression of Zach Burns – it’s a lot tougher than it looks.

The Afro shirt, along with the rest of the collection are on sale now at Redbubble for $35. The rumor is that my tee is popular in Australia, which weirds me out, and makes me smile all at once. You can access the full collection via the link below, and feel free to critique me all you want… I think I have it coming.
