Do We Need The NAACP Image Awards?

According to the NAACP, The Real Housewives of Atlanta really helped the advancement of colored people?

Why in the world is The Real Housewives Of Atlanta nominated for a NAACP Image Award?

Sure, if this was an award for who will most likely lose their house, or who has the best fake side business — then The real heffas of Atlanta would be prime nominees. But this award is about presenting a positive image of minorities, which didn’t happen this season.

For years, the image awards has been about as suspect as a Detroit mayor (they rewarded Monique with a Best actress award for The Parkers) but more recently, they’ve not only have been out of touch, but lately a little out of pocket — it’s as if Glenn Beck and Dick Cheney are on the nomination committee.

While we do realize there isn’t a wealth of content featuring black performers in non reality context (The Cleveland Show is the only black show on the network television, and it’s main character isn’t even voiced by a black guy), does that mean we should still highlight people who don’t deserve the honor?

Is it time the NAACP refocused the Image awards and highlighted volunteers and scholars? It may not garner the same popularity, but at least it would garner something even more important — integrity, and doesn’t that present a better image?

The Nominees Are….
Outstanding Reality Series
> “American Idol 8? (FOX)
> “America’s Next Top Model” (CW)
> “Dancing With the Stars” (ABC)
> “Extreme Makeover” (ABC)
> “Real Housewives of Atlanta” (Bravo)
