Model Thru It: Zach

Evolution model Zach, is so well spoken, he could easily pull a win on a show like VH-1’s America’s Most Smartest Model. But then again… he’s a Brit and he’s way to intelligent for a cheesy move like that. Check out his answers to our crazy questions feature and see if you agree.

Derek

Tell me about your craziest modeling gig?

Probably a test shoot with a photographer called Sean Hickey. Sean had wanted to shoot with me for some time and being near to where I lived, both agreed to meet up and shoot. It was a location shoot in a burnt out building which was really cool but probably the most dangerous or adventurous considering we had to scale a high fence and crawl under some broken gate to get into the building.

Once inside though it was really cool and had a lot of character with the burnt walls, broken glass and debris, it helped give my pictures a whole new feel compared to the usual shots done in the studio. I tried to make the most of my surroundings to give the picture more feel and depth, Sean was all over the place climbing on things, hanging of railings and all sorts to get the shot he wanted, a fun shoot overall.

How does your family feel about the racier aspects of your career?

If it pays well then they cool but then it’s my money, my body and my decision so I’ll do as I please providing it’s not going to land me in any unnecessary trouble or scandal. I’m old enough to make my own decisions and learn from my own mistakes but I’ve got enough sense to know what’s good and what can be avoided. Saying that, my parents still haven’t seen my Dylan Rosser or Gaz nude shots. I’m not in any rush to show them either, my parents haven’t seen me naked since I was 6 and wont anytime soon unless it’s on a billboard for men’s aftershave. On The Left

Tell me about the last time you told a photographer “no,” and why?

Well to be honest I haven’t really needed to say no to a photographer on a shoot because I always make sure I’m clued up on the purpose of the shoot and what needs to be achieved, will do’s and won’t do’s are always discussed first.

I have however had to tell two fashion photographers that I will not send them frontal nude shots of myself. I was asked to send some shots to see “how comfortable” I was with my body and “what I really look like”, I’ve got a face, that’s what I look like. It seemed really dodgy and honestly, who in the right mind would send self taken nude shots to someone they don’t know, their work is pretty good though.

What ethnic stereotype do you live up to?

Good question and actually quite hard to answer because I try not to stick to what’s considered with ones race, I like being myself and doing what I’m happy with. I’m of mixed race and a lot of my life has been influenced by black culture from my mothers side, I listen to hip hop and dancehall, eat Caribbean cuisine most the time and have a lot of black friends but it doesn’t stop me from embracing other ethnic groups interests and activities.

In fashion terms which I think is the easiest way to answer this, I dress how I want to and wear what I think looks good on me whether it be slim jeans, Shemagh scarf’s and plimsolls or jogging bottoms and air force 2’s. Over here in the U.K, I wouldn’t like to be stereotyped based on how I look or live up to it because I believe in being individual. For example, wearing a fitted cap, full hooded tracksuit and trainers isn’t always the best thing to do because you’re really singling yourself out for either a police stop and search or a gang because of the stereotypes associated with that particular image. I don’t live up to it and have my own individual style.

Being from the UK, does that make it tougher or easier to break in the business as a minority?

To be honest, I don’t really know, I don’t think it does. Work is probably more limited but then I reckon it depends on your look, your agency and your connections. If the client likes your look and has the funds to fly you around then I don’t think it matters where you’re from, again I think it’s down to agency and connections, look at Will Chalker and David Gandy for British examples.
